Carbon Fiber airframes and components are available for advanced amateur and professional applications.

 

Public Missiles Ltd. offers a line of airframes, couplers, and nosecones made from the same high-tech aerospace materials and construction techniques you`ve read about in the science and aerospace magazines. Carbon fiber is amazingly strong yet extremely light. Now you can take advantage of the long burn motors that can propel your rockets to much higher altitudes than the fast burners!

PML carbon fiber components are not filament wound. They are convolute wrapped (similar to the way G-10 tubes are made) using actual aerospace quality carbon fiber cloth. The cloth we use is a very tight satin weave common in aerospace applications. The laminate is cured under high pressure and at temperatures of nearly 160 degrees F. This fabric and wrapping method gives our components the most strength in the two dimensions that are most important in rocketry; hoop strength and column strength. This fiber configuration also allows a certain degree of flex to make it much more impact resistant.

You may have heard that carbon fiber is very strong but somewhat brittle. That is NOT the case with our airframes and components. The secret is in the type of resin used to bind the carbon filaments, the method of wrapping, and the temperature during cure. We are rocket guys. We know what a rocket goes through in storage, transport, flight, and recovery. We`ve experimented with many resin/fabric combinations to create the perfect balance of strength, rigidity, and impact resistance.

Another bonus......Carbon fiber components are beautiful! Most people wouldn`t paint a carbon fiber rocket. All that`s requires to bring out the beauty of carbon fiber is a little wet sanding and a nice shiny clear coat. But if you do want to paint it, no problem. The standard finish is 150 grit, sanded. Feel free to mix and match components from the 4 different series below to get the perfect balance of weight and strength required for your particular project. HOWEVER, BE AWARE THAT THE COMPONENTS ON THIS PAGE DO **NOT** FIT OTHER PML PRODUCTS (Example: our FNC-6.0 does not fit the 6 inch carbon fiber tubing on this page, or vice versa.)

PML has offered `glass-wrapped phenolic tubes (FGPTs, on the Airframes Page) for many years. These are used for Level 3 and Mach+ flights. Many people have indicated that they would rather wrap their own tubes using the same fiberglass and carbon fiber fabrics we use. Now you can! PML is proud to introduce our customers to a variety of fiberglass and carbon fiber fabrics for just about every purpose. With these fabrics you can wrap your own tubes, make nosecones, molds and many other structural items. The fabrics are compatible with most if not all industrial and hobby epoxies and adhesives.

ULTRA-LIGHT SERIES COMPONENTS

Save money by using carbon fiber???
"Carbon fiber components cost more than standard components, how would I save money using carbon fiber?" The savings becomes apparent at launch time. Most 6" diameter rockets require a full I or J motor just to get them off the pad. Using our Ultra-Lite carbon components you can fly a 6" diameter rocket with an H motor! This also means you can fly a huge rocket with just a Level 1 cert. As an example, we built an up-scale version of our popular Io kit. The Ultimate Io is 6" diameter and 7`8" tall and only weighs 4.25 pounds. We flew this rocket on a 29mm H-128. We also flew it on a 29mm H-180 and got it to nearly 1000 ft. Other similar sized rockets would need a full I or J motor to reach the same altitude. If you do want to use larger motors, the Ultra-Lite series allows you to use the long burn motors to achieve much higher altitudes than ever before.

CFAF-6.0-UL-90 Carbon Tubing: 6" dia., 90" long
Over 1/3 lighter than phenolic tubing and even cardboard yet 1/3 stronger than phenolic! This airframe is flexible (radially) and very forgiving. This is a great airframe material if you want to launch a large rocket with small motors. Suitable for most sub-sonic flights.

The days of the 100+ pound Level 3 rocket are over!

This is a medium weight cloth intended for lay-ups with sharp and compound curves. This cloth has an open weave that allows the cloth to conform to unusual shapes such as nosecones and transitions. For nosecones we recommend 2 to 4 layers depending on the overall size (larger cone, more layers). If you are making a large nosecone or other part, use this 6 oz. cloth for the first layer or two then back it up using the 10 oz. cloth below. It is also an excellent choice for the surface layer in mold construction. We typically use 1 or 2 layers of 6 oz. and 6 to 10 layers of the 10 oz. cloth when making molds.
